1. Spring & the Schlachtenhaufens return to Sibiu

    April 5, 2010

We’re back in Sibiu, Romania, and seem to have timed our return very well … Spring arriving at the same time.  Chris and Cheryl Quello were here in January and February and we are picking up where they left off.  It’s been good to renew friendships these past days and to experience Holy Week here. We enjoyed Bach’s  ”Johannes Passion ” delivered by the Bach Choir on Tuesday and on Wednesday a “Cross Walk” with children from the congregation.  We attended Maundy Thursday, Good Friday and Easter Services at the Lutheran Church.  Sixteen gathered for the English Easter Service in the afternoon.  Thirty were at the Hotel Roberts for an Easter Dinner.

We are so thankful to the people of the Lutheran Church in Sibiu who have opened their doors and hearts to English-speaking visitors and residents. Here are some of the efforts which are underway.  Ten volunteers are coming from Wisconsin May 14-24 for a week of work at the church compound in Hammersdorf on the outskirts of Sibiu.  They will contribute to the efforts to transform the church there into a Center for Youth Retreats and Environmental Stewardship.  A young leader for the church here will come to Wisconsin this summer to serve as a vounteer counselor at our Crossways Bible Camp.  It is good to see relationship-building happening.  After we leave, another “Pastors Without Borders” clergy couple will come for the summer and three more couples from Minnesota and Texas will each come for a month in the fall.

The people of this community and land have so much to share with us, given their challenging past and future.
